Artists Who Inspired Me

by Tim Warnes

As a kid growing up, hands down the biggest influence was Walt Disney (or rather, his studios!). I remember when I was about five years old; we could choose our own topics to work on in our project books. I chose Walt Disney. I can still see it now! I was so pleased with it.I spent hours copying Disney characters, following step by step guides in my Disney comics, and sometimes with the aid of some Rotadraw Disney sets (remember them?!). I also had (and still have) Walt Disney’s Giant Story Book which I looked at over and over.

As I became older, I referred more to comic book art – Peanuts, Marvel’s Spiderman, Garfield, then MAD Magazine as a teen.

Journey back through childhood classics like Peter Pan, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and more in this adorable picture book about the joys of reading! There is nothing like a book to take you to places you’ve never been. Best friends Foxy and Piggy can’t wait to tell each other about all of their adventures in reading! Flying over Neverland, swimming with a mermaid, joining in a mad tea party, soaring on a magic carpet—old classics come to life in the eyes of two little readers who can’t believe what they’ve seen. Journey back to old favorites and experience the magic all over again in this adorable picture book about the joys of reading!

About the Author: Emily Ford has only ever worked in the world of children’s books, apart from a very early foray into shoe fitting and face painting (she does a great tiger). She’ll write on anything she can find—from notebooks to used envelopes and the backs of old receipts. As a child her handwriting was neat but now it’s almost illegible—only she can read it. Emily lives and works in London.

About the Illustrator: Children’s author-illustrator Tim Warnes lives in a creative household in rural Dorset, England, with his wife, illustrator Jane Chapman, their two boys, and a big, black cat. With more than twenty years working as a children’s author-illustrator, his passion for inspiring creativity in kids and encouraging a love of reading is infectious. Despite being a grown-up, Tim will often read a picture book to himself at bedtime. He also enjoys playing the banjo and wearing fancy hats.

MY REVIEW

The Big Book Adventure introduces readers to Foxy and Piggy, two friends who love reading and sharing about the books that they have read. Piggy meets up with Foxy exclaiming – “You’ll never guess where I have been, or who I’ve met or what I’ve seen. Shall I tell you?”

From there, readers get a quick glimpse at all of the books that Piggy has been reading, like Alice in Wonderland, The Little Mermaid, and Treasure Island. When he is done, Foxy shares where his latest reading adventures have taken him. When they have finished, they swap books so they can experience the same wonderful journeys.

Emily Ford shares her love of stories and the worlds they can open up to us in this sweet book with marvelous illustrations by Tim Warnes. As a book lover, the fact that these two friends bond by talking about what they have been reading and sharing their books makes my heart happy. There were a couple of stories that I don’t recognize. For that reason, the one thing that could have really made this even better is if there were a list of the stories referenced in the back, encouraging kids to take the next step and try reading one of them. A super fun read aloud that gets kids really talking about books.
