Lead rebel girls, lead!

Who doesn’t love a good story about a strong woman taking charge? They are definitely loved by this family. One of our favorites, Rebel Girls, has done it again! They have put together a mini-collection of 25 female leaders in politics, business, sports, activism, and more, all written in fairy tale form. 14 of these stories come from their previously published anthologies and 11 are brand new and exciting. Thank you to NetGalley and Rebel Girls for an opportunity to check out this title that will be available January 26, 2021.

Rebel Girls Lead came about because of the momentous 2020 election where Kamala Harris was elected as the first female vice president of the United States. The team at Rebel Girls sat down to try and figure out how to celebrate it appropriately. Not only did they want to tell Kamala Harris’s story, but the stories of other leaders that emerged in 2020, like Stacey Abrams and Jacinda Ardern. There was a desire to make sure kids saw leadership in its many forms too, in the stories of basketball coach Pat Summitt, Wilma Mankiller, the first female head of the Cherokee Nation, and Xiye Bastida, an 18 year old environmental activist.

With everything that has been going on in politics, it is important for young readers to see women in powerful leadership roles. But it is also important for young readers to realize that they have the potential in them to be the NEXT leaders. The team at Rebel Girls got smart and included what all young girls love, a quiz. This quiz asks what kind of leader are you? Because there isn’t one type of personality that defines leadership. Some leaders work behind the curtain and are rarely noticed while others take center stage. They also encourage young girls to write their own story, making them really think about what they have done so far and what they hope to do in the future.

  1. I bought my daughter the audiobook version of the Goodnight stories a couple years ago, I might have to get her this updated book as well. I’m sure she’ll love the quiz part of it too!
