Raise Your Voice

I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t waiting for today’s inauguration to come. So I was excited to read Love is Powerful, a picture book inspired by the Women’s March in 2017. It puts forth an important message about the power of love and inclusiveness.

Heather Dean Brewer paints the story of young Mari and her mother prepping for and marching in this historic event. Her mother explained that their signs were to send out a message to the world, a message of love. Even though she was only 6 years old, Mari learned that all voices should matter, even when others want to silence you.

In addition to the signs that Mari and her mother made, artist extraordinaire LeUyen Pham also gives the reader glimpses of other signs and of the vast number of people standing up for women. Mari felt that her sign wasn’t going to make a difference, but her voice was heard as her sign echoed throughout the crowd – Love is Powerful.

Heather Dean Brewer has written a beautiful story that takes the high road and focuses on the notions of kindness and equality. People of various races, ages, and abilities are seen encouraging the world to choose love. Additionally, Brewer has amazing teacher resources on her website. There is a lesson plan with fabulous essential questions and super fun coloring pages.

Love is Powerful is a beautiful story that lets kids know that their voices do matter, no matter how small they are. I really loved this book and I might not have heard about it had it not been for Multicultural Children’s Book Day! I was gifted this book from long-time supporter, Candlewick Press.
